PLAKA QUARTER and the ANAFIOTIKA

Place to visit The Plaka, also called “the god’s quarter”, is the most picturesque quarter of Athens, situated at the foot of the Acropolis’ northern and western side. It has been constantly inhabited since ancient times and is officially listed as a traditional settlement because of the many buildings dating from the 19th century. Particularly interesting is the Anafiotika area, where builders from the Aegean island Anafi who came to work after Greece gained its independence, made their small houses in their island’s Cycladic style.  In Plaka’s narrow, twisting narrow streets, many with steps, you can see small un-built plots with antiquities, old byzantine churches, historic 19th century houses, shops and mostly many traditional tavernas where you can enjoy your lunch or dinner of local cuisine with retsina wine or ouzo, listening to live local music, songs and dance.
